GLENDALE, Ariz. (April 22, 2015) - More than one million kids in the United States will try some form of smokeless tobacco this year alone, with 300,000 of them becoming regular users. Smokeless tobacco is a primary cause of oral disease, including cavities, receding gums and oral cancer. We don’t get three strikes when it comes to our teeth, so what better way for the state’s leading dental insurer to get the word out about how to maintain a healthy smile than at a baseball game?
Delta Dental of Arizona kicks off its fifth season as the Arizona Diamondbacks’ No Chew Crew sponsor. The No Chew Crew is a unique club for young fans to increase awareness of the dangers of smokeless tobacco. Members of the No Chew Crew receive a complimentary kid's admission to every Sunday home game and a free Delta Dental toothbrush!
Parents and their children can also attend the Sunday Slugger Show, a monthly 30-minute presentation featuring D. Baxter the Bobcat, Bobby Freeman and a D-backs player educating children about the dangers of smokeless tobacco and promoting good dental habits. The Sunday Slugger Show kicks off at 11:45 a.m. on April 26 at Baxter’s Den in the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Sandlot.
“Many of our children are influenced by the habits of role models such as sports professionals they see on television and now, on social media,” said Sandi Perez, vice president of communications and community benefit at Delta Dental of Arizona. “It just makes sense for us to sponsor such an educational program where children can learn about the nasty effects of smokeless tobacco straight from the baseball players they look up to.”
The No Chew Crew membership is free for children up to 15 years old. A parent must be 18 years or older to register their child for the No Chew Crew.
